I’m a fool for snow

It is SNOWING! I love snow. No matter what people say or how challenging it is to drive/walk in the snow, or how much I have to shovel, I love snow. I was born in winter, spent endless hours in the snow, learned to drive in a snow/ice storm, and have always lived in a snow belt!

When I was home at our IHM Motherhouse earlier this week, I was walking back from the dining room through the cloister hallway and bumped into another sister who was, like myself, gazing outside at the softly falling snow. “I love snow,” I declared, and she followed suit. It was funny because both of us knew we weren’t making an idle weather comment but that we both meant it truly and deeply. I’ve not met many people who share the same depth of love of snow, but in my IHM sister I found a kindred spirit.

I think God is pretty awesome for having figured out the snow thing. With every snowflake that lands on me, that swirls around me, I feel anointed, blessed by God and embraced by God.

Any other snow lovers out there? What is your favorite snow thing to do or experience?

I grew up in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina and we almost always get at least 1 or 2 good snows every winter. As much as I complain about having to drive in snow and ice, (I have a 2-wheel drive sports car) I really do enjoy it. (I don’t especially like the ice, but I can handle the snow) There’s just something about it that’s just almost ethereal. In fact, we’re expecting an “arctic blast” this afternoon. This will be my 1 year old’s second snow experience and she loves it so much! So of course, no matter what, I’ll enjoy seeing her play! I like snow so much more because she loves it! That being said, we have already had 1 pretty bad snowstorm this winter and I’m ready for spring time. I love warm weather so much more than I like cold weather! I am definitely a sucker for warmer weather…

I know exactly how you feel, Sister Julie! I, too, am a winter baby and love the snow. I love the hymn “In the Bleak Midwinter” where it talks about “snow on snow on snow.” I live in Iowa and we are certainly experiencing that now. Like everyone, I hate shoveling, but that is about the only real negative I can come up with about snow. It makes the world beautiful; there is nothing like the moonlight on snow! May you continue to enjoy your winter wonderland.

I like snow when I don’t have to go anywhere. Here in Seattle, it’s beautiful when it snows and all of the evergreen trees are covered. However, many Northwesterners are inexperienced when it comes to driving in snow, so there’s a lot of freaking out on the roads. That coupled with a lack of snow plows and equipment (because we don’t get that much snow), plus hilly terrain, can make for scary driving. I lived in Rochester, NY for 4 years when I was in college, and I always say that was enough snow to last me for the rest of my life. I was really impressed with how everyone dealt with snow there.

I woke up to snow this morning…and it’s still snowing. For about an hour it stopped. I was truly sad. More than once, I got up to look out the kitchen door to see if it started snowing again. When I saw that it was snowing again, I announced loudly to the dogs, “It’s snowing. Aren’t you happy?”

It is snowing here in Ohio! I just came in from a long walk and really appreciated all the people who did not shovel their sidewalks, so I could kick up the snow! It is beautiful and peaceful.

I was born in a blizzard. Literally. It took my parents four hours to drive to the hospital behind the snowplow. The hospital is normally a 20 minute drive. I LOVE snow! It is so much a part of who I am. I am so lucky to be Canadian, I get to experience snow every winter. The kind that comes in November or December and doesn’t melt until the middle of the spring, well into May sometimes. Sunsets on snow are wonderful, as are moonlight and starshine. But my favourite activity in snow is snow angels with my 4 year old nephew.

It is snowing where I am too, and it has been snowing all night. There is probably a foot of snow on top of the trees (evergreen & others) and it is super beautiful! Other good thing, because the buses aren’t running my professor canceled classes today.

Sister Julie, what year was that picture taken? We’re the same age, and we had a few good snowfalls in our day ie Blizzard of ’78. My brothers and I loved to play in the snow and make “snow scupltures” which we “spraypainted” with food coloring and water in spray bottles. I made a walrus one year; it was supposed to be a baby seal but got out of hand…When my brothers got snowed in at home over “spring” break in college, we all went outside and played in the snow like we did when we were kids. Too fun. Thanks for sharing!

Sister Gayle, I think that picture was 1979 or so. We never thought of the food coloring thing (maybe we did and parents intervened!) but my dad would build us a huge (to us) hill, a kind of bobsled run with curves and jumps. He’d shovel all the snow from the driveway to the yard to make the hill and then ice it down at night. It was THE BEST!

I was a December baby and born in the midst of a snowy winter in ’79. But….alas…….I can not say I love the snow. I love the beauty of it. The reminder it brings that all things are created anew. But…..being out in it is another story!

Cool picture of you and your sister and brother in the back yard. I remember that hill father used to build and ice down with the garden hose.

I grew up in Southern California where snow was the stuff of fairytales and the rare family vacation. Even after living in Indiana for 3 years and DC for 2, snow is still as magical as it was when I saw it for the first time.
