The Dogs sing of Lent

The first time I heard music by the group called the Dogma Dogs was in theological school. My professor, seeing the students drift off a bit in the middle of our two-hour afternoon class, cranked up the song “Lent.” Next on the playlist was the dance tune, “21 Ecumenical Councils,” followed by the rock classic, “Pharaoh.” It was the comic break that we needed!

The songs are actually for helping children learn about their Catholic faith. But for adults, the songs have a cleverness that makes them funny, sort of like a “Grammar Rock” for religion.

So have a listen to the Dogma Dogs clips below, but beware — you might hear the words “Lent, Lent, Time to Repent” replay in your head all day. (click each of the following to play -- opens in new window)

Do you have a song recommendation for Lent or other seasons in the church year? We’d love to hear about them!

Can always hook me with the word “Dogs”, Maxine! the music sounds like great fun. First time I have heard it and just in time for enjoying my second childhood.

BTW, I so enjoyed the young David Nantais last night. He is a lovely young man. Thank you to all who worked to bring the program to air.

Yep, Barbara. Plus the combo of “dogs” and “sing” and “Lent” makes the mind wonder!! Also glad to hear you enjoyed the convo with Dave last night. Was a lot of fun having him on the podcast.

Regarding “Do you have a song recommendation for Lent?” Dust in the Wind (Kansas) for Ash Wednesday! (No, I am not kidding – it totally fits!). Oh, and I would totally get rid of all the “you can’t play/sing *that* during Catholic funerals rule which once again brings me back to Dust in the Wind…

Don’t think I’ve ever heard that song in church, Zeke, but gotta agree, it’s right on for Ash Wednesday. I vividly remember listening to Dust in the Wind (and other songs from Kansas’ Point of Know Return) many times. I remember enough of the words by heart that whenever I hear it on the radio, I can sing along.

How did I get this far in my life without hearing of the Dogma Dogs? I only knew Hi God…
