Monday is NUNDAY! And today we have a local nun from Sylvania, Ohio, right by us in Toledo! Sister Jane Mary Sorosiak, OSF, is a Sister of Saint Francis and an artist. She currently ministers at Alverno Art Studio near Lourdes University. Sister Jane Mary was recently featured in The Eagle, the newspaper of Bryan, Texas, following the installation of her artwork at a local hospital. The article "Nun Shares Faith Through Custom Murals" by Jordan Overturf (June 9, 2013) covers the assembly and unveiling of the new ceramic murals and also a bit about the artist herself.

Here a few quotes:

The Eagle was given the chance to sit down with Sister Jane Mary, who talked about her life and how she wove art and faith together to further her ministry.

"It does fulfill a mission, especially for the Franciscans because we value external beauty," she said. "Our mother superior ... always felt the sisters should be surrounded by beauty if they're going to respond to that beauty. It's kind of a philosophy we've been living with."

When served with praise, the nun who was born and raised in Ohio only responds with humility. Sister Jane Mary remains amazed at her work, including a piece hanging at St. Joseph. "The one you have here with that quotation from Corinthians -- when I look at that, the design is so intricate, I say 'How did I ever come up with that?' And I think I know. It's the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. I'm quite sure of it," she said.
