Rear-view mirror reflections

7:44 a.m. Heading out of the convent to work in the morning, I am focused on what's on my agenda for the day, not the near occasions of grace all around me. That's got to change. I was headed out to work the other morning on a mission to make the most of the day. At the time, it meant having my coffee ready, my computer primed, and my calendar laid out. As I drove through the neighborhood, I saw ahead of me at the turn in the road one of my neighbors walking his dog.

The Old Man and the Dog by @jericho1405My neighbor, an older gentleman in his 80s, with his equally older dog are out there every day rain or shine. On this particularly frigid day, I slowed down and rolled down my window and gave him a big smile and a wave. He stopped and waved back -- not the token acknowledgement wave but a vigorous "so glad to see you" wave. I continued on my way to my very important busy day.

It is so hard to get that moment of out my mind though! In my rear-view mirror I still see my neighbor and his dog, both walking gingerly over ice and snow, stopping now and again for a rest, a squirrel, a neighborly wave. I also see determination, care for creation, and a joy in life. Would that I might see from every window these wonderful moments of God's grace!

And would that we could live each moment with the presence that you had when you stopped and connected with your neighbour (and that we could recognize that these moments are just as important as our to do lists!) Thank you for the reminder. I have a similar neighbour with a similar dog - God must like using him as a reminder.

What Kerri said....Can't help but wonder what grace might have come from a brief conversation with the old man so glad to see us. So many have no one.

Ah yes, our to do lists are so very important -- and often they are! But there must always be time for the neighbour and dog. :) And remember GOD ... DOG. ;)
