“When Jesus had taken the wine, he said,
'It is finished.'
And bowing his head, he handed over the spirit.” (John 19:30
We count on God to be at our side, through thick and through thin -- and yet despite this expectation, this persistent hope, we often silently (or not so silently!) cry out: "My God, why have you forsaken me?"
It is easy to empathize with Jesus in the crucifixion narratives; it is easy to understand his feelings of abandonment and deep sorrow. After all, like us, he was human! But what we have to keep at the forefront of our minds is that God had not forsaken Christ. Jesus was not alone. Neither are we alone as we carry our own crosses. God is at our side, even in those moments when we doubt that's the case.
This week, we focus on generosity, trying to give without counting the cost -- trying to give as Christ gave everything he had, as God gives us everything we have. Let us be filled with gratitude, and give unto others as it has been given unto us.
