Today, we have a local nun from Sylvania, Ohio, right by us in Toledo! Sister Jane Mary Sorosiak, OSF, is a Sister of Saint Francis and an artist. She currently ministers at Alverno Art Studio near Lourdes University. Sister Jane Mary was recently featured in The Eagle, the newspaper of Bryan, Texas, following the installation of her artwork at a local hospital. The article "Nun Shares Faith Through Custom Murals" by Jordan Overturf (June 9, 2013) covers the assembly and unveiling of the new ceramic murals and also a bit about the artist herself.

Most of us when we hear the words the “Flying Nun” immediately think of the 1960s comedy sitcom of the same name starring actor Sally Field as the Daughter of Charity, Sister Bertrille. Sister Batrille’s habit included a large, almost winged, head covering. Each time a wind came up it would cause Sister Bertrille to lift off the ground and fly. The comedy of course is that this happened at the most awkward of times.

Olympics Speedskater is now a Catholic Nun

Today we celebrate an Olympian who is now a Franciscan nun. Kirstin Holum was just 17 years old when she competed in speedskating at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano. She took 6th place in the 3000 meter which was considered a great achievement and a sign for future greatness.
